By Albert Phang

Event photography has always been an attractive career for the creatively inclined. An event photographer gets an impressive fee for using his photographic skills to capture pictures in different events of both formal and informal nature. People want to treasure such events and look back at them fondly through the photos, which is why event photography is so important.

Any photographer who has had some expert training can make a career in event photography. However, to do a great job, there are some guidelines that should be kept in mind.

The first thing to consider is the type of event that is being photographed and the intended use of the pictures. For example, if you are covering a corporate event, where the photos are intended to be published in an internal magazine, then you must focus on the precise proceedings of the event and develop a sequence of pictures that show how the event proceeded. On the other hand, if you are photographing a private party, then it would be more prudent to focus on the people, particularly their faces.

Alertness is a key characteristic in event photography. You must be completely aware of the happenings around you and must know when to click and when to wait. Employers also prefer hiring photographers who comprehend what is going on around them and do not have to be constantly told about when to take a picture. Even though you will develop this talent only after covering a few events, you should constantly keep making efforts to learn it.

Knowledge about the location would aid you in photographing the event properly. You must be aware of the spots where the most important parts of the event are going to take place and the perfect locations that would allow you to click good photographs of the event.

You should also know about the technical aspects of your camera and its different settings so that you can easily take images from tough angles and cover the important aspects of the event. Lighting is a crucial element of photography and a good event photographer must collect information about the intensity of light that will be available at the venue. On the basis of this knowledge, you should be ready with proper equipment and with the camera in the right mode.

Lastly, an event photographer must also have a friendly personality. You ought to be able to mingle with the group that you would photograph. If you are able to mix with the people and feel the spirit of the event then the subjects would be more relaxed and the images will be much better.
